Older models back in fashion

THE resurgence of 1990s supermodels Elle Macpherson and Claudia Schiffer and a new TV model search for over-35s has put older models back in the spotlight.

New series She's Got The Look - screening on Saturdays on Foxtel's W Channel - has put older female models firmly in the spotlight. The contestant line-up includes a 63 year old.

W channel manager Penny Win said: "With the swell of interest in having older and real women on screen and in advertising campaigns, the timing seems right for a show such as She's Got The Look to celebrate both age and beauty."

Finesse Models director Brigette Mitchell said there was an appetite for older models in Adelaide, but that it was men who scored the most work.

But Finesse's Alison Pratt, 43, is bucking that trend, having modelled since she was 18. ". . . it's a good way to earn extra money," she said.

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood launches fashion range

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood has launched an ''electrifying'' new clothing and accessories range, that he says is based on his artwork.

The 62 year-old rocker has launched the colourful, edgy designs featuring swirling patterns and guitars at department store Liberty.

Those seeking rock star chic can snap up an I Feel Like Painting shift dress in splashes of orange and yellow for £495 or a leather day bag for £715.

Liberty of London's creative director, Tamara Salman, teamed up with the musician to create the autumn/winter range.

Salman's collection is inspired by a selection of Wood's vibrant paintings, translating them on to fabrics such as canvas into leather, cotton, jersey, foil and nylon.

Wood said he found it inspiring to complete his first collection with ''such a prestigious British company that has, in the last century, worked with amazing talents such as William Morris''.

Wood posed for pictures at the launch in London next to a display of his creations housed in a giant red cage.

Three of Wood's paintings form the basis of the capsule collection.

One of them is titled I Feel Like Painting, which Wood simply said resulted from ''the day when I decided to turn my life around''.

For men, T-shirts and cotton button-up shirts are emblazoned with the words ''I feel like painting'' in graffiti-like brushstrokes.

Salman said of Wood: ''He invited me to see his paintings, which I immediately fell in love with and which inspired me to turn into prints for an exclusive range for Liberty of London.

''I particularly liked his vivid use of colour, the presence of floral patterns in his design, which is very Liberty and the undeniable influence of rock n' roll.''

The collection will make a star appearance at top end stores across the world, ranging from Liberty and Harrods in London, to stores in Japan, Ireland, Italy and the United States.

French Fashion

French fashion - The association of France with fashion and style (French: la mode) dates largely to the reign of Louis XIV when the luxury goods industries in France

Fashion has been important industry and cultural export of France since the seventeenth century, and modern "haute couture" originated in Paris in the 1860s. Today, Paris, along with Tokyo, London, Milan, and New York City, is considered one of the world's fashion capitals, and the city is home or headquarters to many of the premier fashion houses. Historically, many of the world's top designers and fashion houses have been French, including Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Chloé, Hermès, Guy Laroche, Yves Saint Laurent and shoe designer Christian Louboutin. The Paris fashion houses also attract many foreign designers.

Since the seventeenth century, the headquarters for fashion houses have been traditionally situated in the quarter around the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Since the 1980s, the Avenue Montaigne has, to some extent, overtaken the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in high fashion as well as accessories. Other areas, such as Le Marais, a traditional Jewish quarter, have also included the clothing industry.

The Paris Fashion week takes place twice a year after the London Fashion Week and before Milan Fashion Week. Dates are determined by the French Fashion Federation. Currently, the Fashion Week is held in the Carrousel du Louvre.

Thousands of Women Swap Clothes Online to Save Money in a Recession

There were no other online clothes swap sites - we were the first! The economy and the environment weren't at the forefront of people's minds, and I had a lot of people telling me that I was crazy - that the idea would never take off"

Urban street fashion clothing can be swaped online and help people find clothing that suit

Fast forward to 2009. With economic and environmental concern, swapstyle.com has had to increase its servers on a monthly basis to keep up with the huge demand from members uploading swap items. From shoes to bags, cosmetics to designer fashion and vintage clothes, there are tens of thousands of members world-wide swapping and saving thousands of dollars a year through the site.

Not just a clothes swap site, also offers a strong social networking platform in which members chat in forums, create personal profile pages and make friends. "It has become a really thriving online community," says Chesher. "It was always my dream to have swapstyle.com be a space where money didn't matter anymore. I found it refreshing to have an area online where we could enjoy fashion without having the guilt of spending attached" No guessing why one of the sites tag lines is experience guilt free shopping.

Chesher was also disillusioned by the environmental impact that fashion was having on the planet. "The waste created from the fashion industry is huge. We live season by season, sometimes only wearing an item once. It brings a smile to my face knowing that Ive created a easily accessible economically, socially and environmentally sound solution to an age old problem."

With its tag line 'open your world-wide wardrobe', fashion savvy women are taking heed and saving thousands of dollars by getting their fashion for free by swapping.

Britain's internet retailers reap benefits of sterling's first slump of the online era

The collapse in the value of the pound has not gone unnoticed in the bedrooms and home offices of Europe — and as it has tumbled, so Europeans, armed with a suddenly stronger single continental currency, have logged on to their home computers and gone shopping.

The weak pound was behind a near-threefold increase in international sales announced by Asos yesterday, the online fashion retailer following Amazon and eBay in noting surging trade from Europe as people reacted to the discounts of up to 25 per cent represented by the decline of sterling.

The combination of exchange-rate volatility and the internet — the first time that the two have acted in tandem in Britain — has handed an opportunity to shop to those without the time, money or inclination to travel to London.

Asos's international sales are now about a third of its business, having risen 173 per cent in the four weeks to April 24, against the same period last year. Nick Robertson, its chief executive, said: “That's the bonus of the internet — you can get to lots of people without having to open stores. It's entirely logical; in order to sell something in France, before the internet came along, I had to open a shop there.”

If Asos's results proved that fashion-conscious youth knows no borders, provided it has an internet connection and a credit card, others have noted similar results in more mature markets. Brian McBride, chief executive of Amazon's British business, a magnet for middle-aged book-lovers, said last last week that it had experienced a marked increase in shipments to Europe.

James Roper, chief executive of IMRG, the internet retail trade body, said: “This is a golden opportunity for British retailers, who are some of the most advanced online practitioners in the world and who can ride on the UK's global reputation for trust, integrity and efficiency.”

Nor is it the big companies who are making the most of the pound's plight. EBay, the auction website, said that British sellers — the army of home-bound mini-entrepreneurs who have taken their car-boot-sale capitalism to a wider audience — had pounced on the weak pound by selling to Europe. In January, the most recent month for which figures are available, exports by 244,000 British-based sellers soared by 49 per cent against the previous January. The United States was the biggest market, worth £9.5million in January, followed by the main euro-dominated markets Germany (£6 million), France (£5.4 million), the Republic of Ireland (£5.3 million) and Italy (£4.3 million). Mobile phones and watches were the goods most exported from Britain.

John Pemberton, who runs an eBay business turning over £250,000 selling designer clothing, said that international sales had more than doubled in the past year. He said: “Going into November, I started to see our courier bills go through the roof. I looked into it and it was because so much was going to France and Germany.” In January to March, 25 per cent of Mr Pemberton's £60,000 sales were to other European Union countries. For the same quarter last year, only about £7,000 went to these markets.

Asos, seeing which way the wind is blowing amid the economic storm damaging so many other sectors, is putting increasing emphasis on its international business. Yesterday, Jon Kamaluddin, formerly its chief financial officer, began his tenure as international director. The company will soon begin to operate country-specific websites.
